As you read in a previous chapter, Emperor Constantine ended the persecution of Christians, and Emperor Theodosius made Christianity the official state religion of the Roman Empire. The Mission of The Orthodox Church in America, the local autocephalous Orthodox Christian Church, is to be faithful in fulfilling the commandment of Christ to “Go into all the world and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…” The Byzantine music that survives is the whole Church, with the exception of some imperial hymns, which they have religious elements. And it was written by a Saint of the Church - St. Byzantine chant was heavily influenced by the Greek culture - as Byzantium was a Greek city - and by Jewish traditions, from where Christianity was derived.
